There are numerous dangers that exist in technology today and an infinite number of seemingly improbable dangers coming in the future. What can we do? We plan, mitigating as many vulnerabilities as we can with what we know. But what about those we don't know? Those waiting around the corner to suddenly blast us to an unknown situation at an unknown time? We employ the use of tools that allow us to learn and adapt. We share knowledge to benefit everyone as a whole. Most importantly we build security concepts into everything an organization does. We as security professional do this instinctively in our personal lives, but we must figure out how to get everyone on that same page. Security is all too often the least supported, disregarded, and loathed aspect of any organization that can have the biggest impact to its success or failure. As security professionals we understand the potential devastation that can be unleashed by the vulnerabilities exist and perhaps even fear those we don't yet know. However, at times, it seems everyone else in the world seems completely oblivious these dangers (despite our often-intense rants). So how do we get them to understand? We tailor the message to the audience. Every group in an organization believes what they do is the most important (but we really know it's security). So, we show how security can improve their processes, make them more productive, save them money, and make them money (that last one's the real kicker).
Learning Objectives:
• It's important to know what you know and more important to know what you don't know...
• Plan for the worst. Prepare for the infinite improbabilities that consist of the unknown.
• What is a "Holistic" approach to security?
• Does security include improving organizational processes like streamlining, simplifying, and lean operations?
• Security shouldn't be a side project, chore, or necessary evil.
• Getting "Buy-in". How to get everyone on board with security and changing its value and return on investment.
