Accessibility & Non-Traditional Spaces
September 27th, 2019
Berrytown Recreational Center
Evan Hatfield, Co-Founder of the Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium and a Chicago based Arts and Events Accessibility Consultant will present on how to incorporate accessibility when you are in non-traditional spaces. For those of you who work outside of the standard theater or museum environment, this is a great opportunity to learn how to consider and include accessibility planning in the work you are doing. Does your organization offer events in schools? Parks? Coffee shops? This will be a great session for you.
Evan Hatfield (he/him/his) is an independent consultant focusing on accessibility, operations and hospitality for cultural arts and events. From 2005 to 2019, he worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he created the position of Director of Audience Experience and implemented accessibility initiatives that include relaxed/sensory-friendly programming, touch tours, city-wide audio description trainings, open captioning, all-gender restrooms and the installation of induction hearing loops. From 2013-2018, he served as a founding co-chair of the Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium (CCAC), and served through 2019 as a member of the steering committee and vice president of the board. He frequently consults with organizations and events on accessibility programming and services and has presented on accessibility in various cities and university settings. While he was a CCAC co-chair alongside Christena Gunther and Lynn Walsh, CCAC was acknowledged with the Raymond R. Snyder Commitment to the Arts Award from Lifeline Theatre Company (2016) and an Emerging Leaders Award from The John F. Kennedy Center (2015). In 2012, Evan was honored as a recipient of the Actors’ Equity Kathryn V. Lamkey Award for dedication to equal opportunity. evan@evanhatfield.net
This session will be followed by a 50-minute round table with Evan where any accessibility topic can be brought to the table. The roundtable will take place at Berrytown Recreation Center from 10:40 - 11:30.
